About this blog

Hi, I'm Your Wallet !

This blog shares ideas on how to serve affordable meals that are nutritious, tasty, and fairly quick to bring to the table when money is tight. Maybe tweaking the budget a bit is enough. Or it's actually time for mostly rice and beans, because making ends meet has become a real struggle.  Hopefully the suggestions here can help turn things around.

How it started

I have always been interested in nutrition and how to bring meals to the table that support good health. Here in Alberta, groceries are pricier than in many other parts of the world. A short growing season and the need to bring food in from far away automatically  put us at a disadvantage. With the cost of living now rising at an ever-faster pace, it appears that nutritious meals are becoming a luxury for many.

While researching how to keep food costs as low as possible I came across the work of content creators on social media who have compiled a treasure trove of tips and recipes that focus on very small food budgets. Even more ideas come from the comment sections of these posts, written by people who are used to stretching every dollar.

This blog is where I share what I have learned. Not everything will fit everybody, depending on personal circumstances, preferences, or customs. My suggestions are meant to be starting points for further exploration.  It's about making the most of any grocery budget and creating food that is nourishing, tasty, and fairly easy to prepare.

What this blog is about

Feeding omnivores

This blog is written with 'omnivores' in mind. That's because it's not always possible to stick to a specific diet when money is tight. Generally, my suggestions are in line with Canada's Food Guide.

Meal suggestions, not detailed recipes

There won't be any detailed recipes here. Based on my suggestions, a quick internet search will yield a broad range of recipes that fit various preferences and the ingredients that may be on hand.

Lower-cost meal ideas

Since grocery prices vary greatly depending on location, season, store sales, or brand it's not possible to provide cost-per-serving estimates. My suggestions focus on ingredients that tend to be among the generally more affordable ones.
